More than 200 people were killed and hundreds more were injured in a deadly train accident in India's Odisha region on Friday evening, reported Xinhua, quoting officials.

At least 207 people died and about 900 injured in the accident, according to a twitter post by Pradeep Jena, chief secretary of the region.

A passenger train hit the derailed coaches of another train in the eastern Indian state, multiple local media reports said.

The accident occurred around 7:20 p.m. local time near Bahanaga Bazar station in Balasore district, about 171 km northeast of Bhubaneswar, the capital city of Odisha.

According to officials, the Coromandel Express, which runs from Kolkata to Chennai, hit the Yashwantpur-Howrah Express, which derailed and toppled onto the adjacent track.

Following the accident, various rescue and response teams were quickly dispatched to the site to conduct necessary measures.

The accident disrupted train movement on the affected route.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed grief over the loss of lives in the accident.
