Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on Tuesday decided to cancel his participation in a four-way summit to be held in Amman, the capital of Jordan, on Wednesday and returned to Ramallah, reported Xinhua.
"President Abbas decided to return to the homeland and called for a meeting of the Palestinian leadership tonight," the Secretary of the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization said in a brief statement.
Abbas met in Amman with U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Tuesday afternoon, in preparation for the quadrilateral summit scheduled for Wednesday, which includes King Abdullah II of Jordan, Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi, U.S. President Joe Biden along with Abbas.
Abbas's decision came after the bombing of the Al-Ahli Baptist Hospital in central Gaza City on Tuesday, which left hundreds of deaths and injuries. The Gaza-based health ministry said the airstrikes were carried out by Israel, while the Israeli military said the Islamic Jihad organization is responsible for the "failed shooting" that targeted Israel.
