Last Generation climate activists vow to disrupt Berlin Marathon

The climate activist group Last Generation vowed on Friday to disrupt the upcoming Berlin Marathon, which is scheduled for Sunday in the German capital, reported dpa.

"Because there seems to be a lack of clarity about this: yes, we are interrupting the Berlin Marathon. We cannot run away from the climate catastrophe," Last Generation said on Friday morning in a terse press release.

The group provided no further details and did not immediately respond to inquiries from dpa.

Last Generation has attracted widespread attention, and frequent criticism, for its disruptive protest tactics.

Activists with the group routinely block traffic with street blockades, sometimes gluing themselves to the pavement, and have pulled off other actions. Earlier this week, activists from the group sprayed Berlin's landmark Brandenburg Gate with orange paint.

On Thursday, Berlin Mayor Kai Wegner said people in Berlin are "really fed up" with climate activists and pledged to take a tough stance toward illegal demonstrations.

The Berlin Marathon is considered one of the world's premier long-distance running races. The field of entrants this year includes Kenyan star marathoner Eliud Kipchoge, who set the marathon world record last year in Berlin.
