German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has called for an equal partnership with the emerging states of Asia, Africa and Latin America ahead of the G20 summit of major economies in India, reported dpa.

"This is also a great … obligation on our part," the chancellor said in an interview with Deutschlandfunk radio published on Saturday.

He emphasized that many Western states have a special responsibility towards countries on these continents because of their colonial history. Germany had colonies in Africa and Asia.

This is the moment "that we invest everything for this level playing field," Scholz said.

The leaders of the Group of 20 (G20) top economic powers plan to meet next Saturday in the Indian capital New Delhi for a two-day G20 summit.

Since the beginning of his term in office, Scholz has been striving to deepen relations with the countries of Asia, Africa and Latin America — also in order not to leave these continents to the influence of China and Russia.

Last year, Scholz invited India, Indonesia, South Africa, Senegal and Argentina to the G7 summit in Elmau, Bavaria. He also advocates the inclusion of the African Union in the G20.
